Premium Japanese fish food for
Koi, pond and aquarium fish & reptiles.

Hikari has developed five pellets for the specific eating habits of different types of fish. These pellets have unique properties that make them easily accepted by even the pickiest fish. They also take into account where different fish eat their food, for example, a pellet for mudskippers and bottom dwellers should sink quickly to the bottom, while floating food is again suitable for fish that eat on the water surface. There are 4 different properties, these are indicated with symbols on our products: floating food, semi-floating, slowly sinking food and sinking food

Round pellets

The most commonly used round pellets, for Koi, pond fish, betta, goldfish and cichlids. The soft pellets have a solid structure and soften in the water without falling apart. Does not cloud the water when used correctly.

Spongy food

Pellets and sticks for tropical and marine fish that normally only eat live food. The food becomes spongy in the water. The elastic structure is similar to that of live food.

Disc-shaped food

Soft, thin wafers and disc-shaped pellets. The wafers are specially designed for bottom-dwelling fish that, with a downward-facing mouth, need to swallow or scrape the feed. The shape is retained and does not cloud the water.

Granulate

Very small pellet for smaller tropical fish to replace flake food, easy to eat and bursting with nutrients. Prevents discolouration and cloudiness of the water. Features Hikari® Micro-Coating™ so that ingredients are not lost in the water.

Hard pellets

Food with a very solid composition. Shape and nutrients are retained in the water for a longer period of time. Suitable for lobsters and crabs that eat slowly by tearing the food into smaller bite-sized pieces.

Hikari

Hikari®
Japan is renowned for the exceptional quality of its Koi and ornamental fish. Keeping fish in a pond or aquarium is more than just a hobby—it’s an integral part of Japanese culture. Hikari has over 140 years of experience in breeding ornamental fish and Koi, as well as producing fish feed in its own factories. The company also conducts extensive research into the natural feeding habits and nutritional needs of both freshwater and marine fish.

Naturally, the feed is also used in Hikari’s own breeding facilities, allowing results to be observed directly. Hikari offers a wide range of fish feeds, each with unique characteristics designed to ensure they are readily accepted by the specific species for which they are developed. This attention to detail means even the most selective eaters will quickly come to prefer Hikari feeds.

Saki-Hikari®
Saki-Hikari® was originally developed specifically for professional Japanese Koi breeders. Common challenges arise during Koi cultivation: poor water quality caused by the accumulation of organic waste and inadequate filtration, rapid spread of diseases, unbalanced growth, and fat buildup. These issues are often directly related to the fish’s diet.

Saki-Hikari® effectively addresses these problems and delivers outstanding results. Proof of this includes 14 All Japan Grand Champion titles since the turn of the century. Saki-Hikari® is the result of years of scientific research, product development, and close collaboration with leading Japanese Koi breeders.

ISO

ISO 22000 Certification
All three factories of Kyorin Food Ltd. were the first in Japan, in the ornamental fish feed industry, to obtain ISO 22000 certification for their food safety management system. This international standard is aimed at “preventing food-related harm” and ensuring “high quality” across all processes from production to consumption. It combines HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) for food safety assurance with ISO 9001 for quality management.

The four objectives of ISO 22000 certification:

  1. Improved reliability through a global standard: Since ISO is an internationally recognized certification system, achieving ISO 22000 allows us to meet global safety and reliability standards. While we already had HACCP-based management practices in place, our facilities were not certified as the standard was previously only applicable to food for human consumption. We partnered with DNV GL—a highly influential risk management company headquartered in Norway, active in over 100 countries—for certification. Their global reputation also helps our international distributors with faster customs clearance.
  2. Enhanced quality levels: system organization and increased awareness
  3. System organization: To meet strict regulations and high customer demands, we organize our complex internal production procedures according to international standards.
  4. Increased awareness: Achieving ISO certification is a company-wide initiative, not limited to specific departments. We aim to raise awareness across the entire organization to achieve our collective goals.
